I wasn't sure what to expect as only a casual fan with no collection of Eggy in my iPod. Boy, was I pleasantly surprised after just a few samplings. Their centerpiece, China Forbes, was backed up superbly by the animated Thomas Lauderdale literally "tickling the ivory," intoxicating with her beautiful voice and mesmerizing good looks. Collectively, they sounded great, but this was a result of their individual professional musicianship. A two-tune surprise cameo by NPR's Ari Shapiro was a treat.
My only gripe as a Japanese-American was that they didn't do "Kikuchiyo to mohshimasu" (as well as some other songs) which features Timothy Nishimoto. But I guess that part of the "tour" mentality is to give the audience a heavy dose of the new stuff (which happened to be 2009's "Splendor In The Grass" album).
Overall, a great night with the bar serving up "Eggy's" and the Eggy's serving up some great tunes. The bar overheard someone saying was actually a "Cosmopolitan," vodka+triple sec+cranberry juice, albeit a little short for me at about 2 hours with only a one-song encore.
